It may not have been as big a saga as the HP and Compaq merger which was completed in 2002, but Lenovo’s stunning acquisition of IBM’s Personal Computing Division was finally concluded today.
The $1.25bn mega deal (which also sees IBM take an 18.9 per cent stake in Lenovo) instantly makes the Chinese based company the third largest PC manufacturer in the world behind Dell and HP.
How will the deal effect everyday users? Well, initially not too much. There is a smart new US version of the Lenovo site here, (which you can also see in a grab above) and no doubt a number of international variants will follow. All existing warranties will be respected, contact numbers will stay the same (though there has been some uneasy premises shuffling in recent months that has caused a lot of servicing delays) and for the mean time the IBM badge can still be seen on Thinkpad and ThinkCentre PCs (we notice this section of the Lenovo website still redirects to “www.pc.ibm.com”).
As we mentioned in our update in March, a large number of IBM staffers have transferred directly over to Lenovo (including Steve Ward, Senior VP and GM of the company’s Personal Systems Group, who becomes the new CEO) so the clear message is to suggest a smooth transition.
Should you want to buy a new PC you’ll see the products lines on the Lenovo site still strictly divided between “Thinkpads and ThinkCentre PCs” and “Lenovo Products” and it looks likely to be a few months yet before we see the first entirely new machine from the merger.
In the mean time, Dell, HP et al will no doubt throw out offers galore to try and tempt uncertain customers away, so we expect Lenovo to respond with some pretty strong deals and global advertising of its own. Consumer win, win as I see it.
The only disturbing thing to rear its head so far from the deal is the imposing block caps Lenovo motto:
WE ARE THE NEW.
WE ARE THE FUTURE.
WE ARE LENOVO.
They might as well have added in RESISTANCE IS FUTILE for good measure methinks…
