Hands-on with Newly Unveiled Asus G60Vx

Gaming laptops haven't always had a great reputation, but with consumers' attentions generally moving towards laptops and away from desktops, their continued development is inevitable. Asus was busy showing off its latest effort at a press launch in London today and we swung by to take a closer look.

Dubbed the G60Vx the system is based around a Full HD (that's 1,920 x 1,080) 16in display. Much to our delight the system eschews the ugly 'bling' that's afflicted many a gaming laptop over the years, with the inside of the machine finished largely in black with touches of silver around the touchpad. Rather like Asus' Lambourghini machines there are lots of angular lines, though this machine isn't part of that range.

While the main body of the machine is black, the lid is finished in a fetching gloss white. This machine is part of Asus' Republic of Gamers brand, as siginified by the logo below the Asus lettering.

Like so many laptops right now the G60 has an isolation keyboard (or chiclet as Asus is calling it) and it is backlit. It's a pretty large and roomy keyboard, with space for a full numeric keypad. We had no problems with the key action and quickly found typing at speed quite comfortable. While the Return key is a US style one on this machine, we'd wager this will be different when the machine hits UK retail in mid-July.

Asus has recently begun partnering with Altec Lansing, who provides the speakers for this system. We didn't have time to check out the configuration of this system, but a sub-woofer underneath seems pretty likely - we'll confirm this at a later date.
