With the multiplayer beta of Halo 3 going live today, Microsoft Games Studios and Bungie have decided to make us salivate even more by announcing the title's official release date.
If you live in the US Tuesday 25 September is the day you need to book off work, for the rest of us it is Wednesday 26 September – I figure the Yanks needs the extra day's practice to compete with we battled hardened UK gamers *stoke, stoke*
On top of this, prices for Halo 3 in the US were also revealed with no less than three versions going on sale. The basic game will go for $59.99 (approx. £30), above this is a limited edition for $69.99 and finally the much publicised 'Legendary Edition' – complete with mounted Master Chief helmet (!) – for $129.99.
"Halo 3 is much more than a video game release; it's the biggest entertainment event of the year," said Peter Moore, Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business Corporate VP. I'd usually dismiss such statements as marketing hype but in this case – Crysis apart – there could actually be some substance to it!
In addition, a Halo 3 themed Zune will go on sale in the US next month for $249 as the Microsoft marketing machine kicks into action. Does associating anything with a Zune really help though...?
Update: The Halo 3 beta suffered problems yesterday as many Crackdown owners were unable to download the necessary code. As an apology Microsoft has extended the trial period from 6th June to 10th June. Result!
