Dubbed the 'HTC Firestone' there had been some suggestion we would see it launch alongside the Hero yesterday but with no official word we now get the details from a company leak. What you see below is apparently the Firestone itself and though not verified it certainly fits in with HTC's recent design attempts (missing Zoom Bar aside).
What is more certain however are the specs and, like the Hero, there's some seriously impressive stuff in there. A 3.6in WVGA resistive touchscreen kicks things off alongside the typical high end trio of HSDPA, WiFi and aGPS while an 8MP camera would be the company's highest resolution shooter yet. There's also decent grunt via the 600MHz CPU while other practicalities include an accelerometer and 3.5mm headphone jack, the latter finally becoming the defacto fitting we had pushed for so long.
The potential deal breaker for some will be the Windows Mobile OS, but we are talking about v6.5 (aka Windows Phone) and while it left me particularly cold back in February talk is refinements since then will make it a sizeable improvement on 6.1. August is allegedly the month we'll be able to get our mitts on the HTC Firestone which would mean WM6.5 could debut earlier than expected.
It's hard to imagine how the smartphone market could get any hotter than it is now... oh yeah, the European launch of the Palm Pre.
