HTC Touch HD Sequel Leaks

The HTC Hero might be (deservedly) grabbing all the headlines at present, but the company's sequel to the Touch HD will also likely turn a few heads...

Dubbed the 'HTC Firestone' there had been some suggestion we would see it launch alongside the Hero yesterday but with no official word we now get the details from a company leak. What you see below is apparently the Firestone itself and though not verified it certainly fits in with HTC's recent design attempts (missing Zoom Bar aside).

What is more certain however are the specs and, like the Hero, there's some seriously impressive stuff in there. A 3.6in WVGA resistive touchscreen kicks things off alongside the typical high end trio of HSDPA, WiFi and aGPS while an 8MP camera would be the company's highest resolution shooter yet. There's also decent grunt via the 600MHz CPU while other practicalities include an accelerometer and 3.5mm headphone jack, the latter finally becoming the defacto fitting we had pushed for so long.

The potential deal breaker for some will be the Windows Mobile OS, but we are talking about v6.5 (aka Windows Phone) and while it left me particularly cold back in February talk is refinements since then will make it a sizeable improvement on 6.1. August is allegedly the month we'll be able to get our mitts on the HTC Firestone which would mean WM6.5 could debut earlier than expected.

It's hard to imagine how the smartphone market could get any hotter than it is now... oh yeah, the European launch of the Palm Pre.

I find it suspect that they've still got the honeycomb on the screenshot, MS said quite a few weeks ago that has been removed from the latest builds of 6.5. It'll be interesting to see how many more improvements MS has made with 6.5 since Feb, I feel they can't wait til 7 to sort things out. If they can make it finger friendly nearly everywhere, together with some of the lovely hardware HTC and others are producing then they'll be back in the game.

and I agree with @sonisoe, this sounds like a great phone, but the omission of a flash will be a dealbreaker for many.

@xbrumster: what's wrong with it? You get more buttons in the same space, and you're less likely to hit the wrong one! Having said that, the new manila UI is likely to be in there.

@HK: the honeycomb stuff isn't in there as it is there, but the offset menu still is.

Generally, I think an august launch may be unlikely... I have ROM dumps from september release devices (HTC Leo/SuperStar) that are coming with WM6.5 by default, and have heard nothing about the Firestone at all.

The Snapdragon processor this will have has much better 3D performance than current generation devices.

I hope thats not it, was expecting a Snapdragon processor. I dont see a reason to upgrade to this from my Touch HD, Im already running WM 6.5 and mobile shell 3 as TouchFlo sucks.

Its pretty and all but Its just a pain, even tried the Diamond 2 rom but its to awkward. I want as much info as possible on 1 screen not having to flick around for weather, texts, Calendar etc.

I don't see the point in a 8MP camera when they take 3-5 seconds to actually take the picture and dosen't have a flash. Just give us a good quick 5MP camera.

Hmmmm very negative post there, im disappointed. Hey If they use that new Hero SenseUI I may just regain interest, looks like they combined the best bits of Mobile Shell with the prettiness of TouchFlo 3D.
