So that's April Fools safely negated (Warner Bros buying Pirate Bay... the iPlayer Toaster... I mean, really?!) and we're back onto the good stuff...

HTC has announced the 'Snap', the company's latest Qwerty midrange smartphone and BlackBerry battler. There's nothing overly exciting going on here but it does tick all the expected boxes:

HSDPA, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth with A2DP, 2.4in QVGA display, perfunctory 2MP camera, microSDHC expansion slot and slightly low 256MB ROM, 192MB RAM. More interesting is that HTC has taken a leaf out of RIM's book and dropped the D pad for a trackball 'jog ball' but the usual caveat remains: a Windows Mobile 6.1 core underneath the company's admittedly nice TouchFLO overlay.

No pricing has been revealed as yet but HTC did admit it would be launching the Snap during Q2 - which means either any minute or not until June. For once US customers will be in on the smartphone goodness too with an unlocked version supporting HSDPA at 850/1900MHz and dubbed the 'HTC S721' arriving during 'the summer'.

Now feel free to insert cereal/dodgy 90s dance act puns here...
