HTC Flagship 2009 Handset Specs Leak

Can it really be happening again?

Just two months after a large chunk of the HTC 2009 roadmap leaked in January it seems the Taiwanese manufacturer's butter walled security has been cut through one more...

Yet again wmpoweruser has sourced the detail and now it seems we have the key specs to the company's new smartphones.

The undoubted highlight is the 'Firestone' which crams in a 3.6in WVGA display, HSDPA, a Qualcomm 8250 chipset with 600MHz CPU, 256MB RAM / 512MB ROM, an 8 megapixel camera and Windows Mobile 6.5 aka Windows Phone. A September timeframe has been put on Firestone which suggests Microsoft may just beat its anticipated Q4 release.

Playing a decent second fiddle to Firestone is the previously leaked 'Thor' - the follow up to the Athena which turns heads with a 4.8in WVGA display, Qualcomm 8250 chipset with rampaging 1GHz CPU, 256MB RAM/ 512MB ROM, a 5MP camera and Windows Phone - also due in September.

From here we see 'Whitestone' another handset with a 3.6in; WVGA display but it may somewhat drop the ball by omitting 3G (TBC) though it will feature a 5MP camera and 528MHz camera. Perhaps illustrating how touch and go the Windows Phone release date is, the Whitestone is listed as also coming in September but with Windows Mobile 6.1.

Decidedly more midrange is 'Twin' which while featuring a VGA display and Qualcomm 7501A chipset with 528MHz CPU, also omits 3G and is supplied with a 3.2MP camera. It's scheduled for June.

Lastly 'Maple' (a 3G version of the Excalibur) hits the budget sector with a 2.4in QVGA display, Qualcomm 7228 chipset with 528MHz CPU, reduced 156MB RAM / 256MB ROM, 2MP camera and Windows Mobile 6.5. While this could have appeared anytime in the last 18 months it will actually drop in May.

Downsides? Where are all the Android handsets HTC...?!

And they all look dull as ditch water with generically respectable specs. Is it just me or has the mobile phone market lost it's shine of late?

Boring, boring boring. It's as if since the launch of the iphone, windows mobile vendors have lost the will to live. I had an spv for years, then switched to the iphone last year. The iphone really is streets ahead of the pack.

Agreed. I thought the iphone was going to force other handset manufacturers up to their game, but other than the Palm Pre nothing seems to be coming anywhere close almost 2 years on.

The main problem seems to be this:

Pre-iPhone, other than Palm and RIM, none of the other smartphone manufacturers made their own OS, or if they did, it was complete rubbish. Instead, they used WM.

Now, the situation is still the same. Palm is the only phone manufacturer to have gotten their OS right this time, with RIM having dropped the ball by heading out of their comfort zone. Everyone else is still using WM.

Which is where Android should come in. But it doesn't really seem to be taking off. I'm not sure why, maybe it's because there's less money to be made in up-front partnerships with Android. Either way, some people in the major manufacturers are missing the wood for the trees...

well all i can is that iphone users seem to have joined the apple clan of if it aint apple then it aint good. As Simon and Brian have well shown. Yes the iphone is good but it still no where near as customizable as windows mobile (unless jailbroken) and yes it may not be as polished but they still make good devices and htc have upped their game since the realease of the iphone, look at the interfaces they have made to make windows mobile more useable for the people who actually like to use it.

Will wait and see, loving Omnia too much at the mo.

Unbelievable! All these brainwashed Apple fanatics. The iphone sucks for so many reasons and its such a shame that progressive companies like HTC with superior devices are forced to complete with all the bias towards Apple lovers!

iPhone and HTC - Chalk & Cheese. They both fill different niches and appeal to different demographics...they complement each other. Let's not go down there, each to their own!

I just feel that now they've (with differing degrees of success) crammed the kitchen sink into the humble mobile telephone; GPS, Sat-Nav, music players, audio recorders, video players/recorders, cameras & flash, speakers, touch HD screens, AV out, DTV, the Interwebnet...and we're not talking software yet...etc...that, where do we go from here? What's the next big hardware advance going to be?

Every new phone is just blending into the next at the moment, at a previously unseen & relentless pace. (with many of them heading straight to land fill) I can think of many parallels in the automotive industry. Will there come a day when software will become the major battlefield? Are we already there?

Ohh...I can feel an article coming on.

Quite what this ramble has specifically to do with this article, well, I have no idea :)
