HTC Excalibur/Dash Successor Revealed

With Motorola’s fabled Q never appearing in the UK (at least the first edition – I hear a v2.0 may come near year…) space was left for other super skinny smartphones like Samsung’s i320 and HTC’s Excalibur to exploit the space. HTC in particular seems to be relishing this challenge as just months after the Excalibur launched it has already let slip details of its follow up.

Codenamed the ‘Cavalier’ it is said to abandon the fat bottomed look of its predecessor (pictured above) for a more traditional Blackberry-ish exterior and performs an impressive spec jump.

For starters the Cavalier replaces the Excalibur’s 200MHz OMAP processor with a 400MHz one (significantly, enough to run Skype mobile) and supports HSDPA. A two megapixel camera bumps the 1.3MP-er and the battery capacity has been pushed up from 960mAh to 1050mAh (though I suspect any gains will be negated by the more power intensive CPU).

Elsewhere wireless g, Bluetooth 2.0 and a microSD expansion slot and mini USB connectivity are all present and correct while the 320 x 240 screen resolution remains intact. VGA where are you…?

No time schedule or pricing has been put on the Cavalier yet – or official name for that matter – so don’t expect to see it before the end of Q1 next year. Any sooner and the Cavalier would be stabbing the Excalibur in the back… (come on I resisted this long).

Update: Now we have a pic...
