Here's an interesting case of role reversal...
HTC, known in the past for its tablet crossovers like of the Ameo (aka Athena - pictured), has come out and said it isn't interested in jumping on new tablet bandwagon at this stage. HTC global PR and online community manager Eric Lin told Pocket-lint:
"We are always looking at it, but, right now, the whole idea is that in order to be successful with a tablet, you need to have something compelling. And not just a compelling form factor. You need to find that compelling use, that compelling story, that one compelling feature. And we are not going to do anything until we have found that."
By contrast RIM is set to surprise everyone by making its own BlackBerry tablet according to Rodman and Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar: "Research In Motion is trying to pull forward the launch of the 7-inch touchscreen tablet from early next year to year end...with a marginal point of differentiation being the front- and back-facing cameras for videoconferencing," he stated in a research note late last week.
According to Kumar, the model will run a 1GHz Marvell powered CPU (presumably the Armada) and, should the company get it right, there is no denying the market for a more business-centric tablet as an alternative to the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab.
RIM has declined to comment on Kumar's note, something which traditionally suggests rumours are along the right lines - especially when the company has a history of Swiss cheese security. Then again, we're not going down the ass/u/me assume route just yet.
Interestingly HTC was historically a business focused smartphone maker who indulged in making products outside of the standard handset form factor and RIM was desperately trying to break into the consumer space and rigidly sticking to its tried and trusted Qwerty candybar form factor. How times change...
