HTC And Nokia Making Announcements Next Week

It is amazing how many times technology companies end up holding press conferences and events on the same day in the same place – and so next Tuesday we have mobile phone giants, Nokia and HTC, going head-to-head.

First up will be Nokia with its press conference at 10am where it will be talking Symbian, which will be a disappointment to those hoping Nokia was only joking when it said the first WP7 phone would not arrive until late in 2011 or early 2012. The tagline on the invite says “Discover what's new with Symbian smartphones.” So what could it be? Well, it’s likely to be information about the next Symbian update we first heard about last month in Purnima Kochikar’s open letter to developers. It promises a new home screen, new flexible widgets, new icons, a faster browser, new Navbar and a new look and feel to Ovi Store and Ovi Maps. Then again, it could be some new hardware which would be interesting.

HTC’s invite actually arrived prior to Nokia’s but its press conference will start later in the day at 1.30pm. The tagline on this mysterious invite says: “Join us to see what’s next.” So what will this press conference throw up? It’s likely to be some new hardware from HTC with a UK version of the EVO 3D we saw launched at CITA last month a possibility. There is also the mysterious Pyramid handset that has been floating around internet forums for quite some time. On the other hand HTC is rumoured to be bringing out a couple of more tablets this summer to complement the Flyer and this seems like about the right time to launch these new devices.

Whatever it is we do see at the press conferences next week, you’ll be the first to hear about it as we’ll be reporting live from both events in London.

That headline got me excited, I thought they were making a joint announcement (HTC bought by Nokia....) and not two seperate ones on the same day.

The Symbian isn't a disappointment to me since they'll be supporting it for at least two years. After using a ZTE Blade and iPhone 3GS for the last few months I'm back with the N8 because they were ultimately disappointing. Nokia do need to get the finger out with a decent keyboard set up, the rest - flexible widgets, etc - I don't care about.

As for apps, it's true enough - there are about forty which are any use and which are pretty much all cross platform. The rest are crap with the exception of some games where the iPhone still leads for now... not that it matters to be honest as ten minutes on a train playing Infinity Blade is no better than ten playing Tank hero.

As for HTC, I imagine they'll announce a few more minor variations on the Desire. How exciting!

@Sleeper. I know what you mean with the jaded excitement over the next version of the Desire from HTC. OTH, if it ain't broke, why fix it?

However, I'm really hoping that the announcement will actually be the rumoured Pyramid, with a rumoured dual core processor. That would be enough to keep my wandering eyes with HTC when my own phone contract is up for renewal.

@Bluespork I think you're wish will come true as all the rumours we're hearing is that it will indeed be the dual-core Pyramid announced, though it will probably be called the Sensation in the UK.
