HTC has finally got it...
After years of sabotaging its generally excellent handsets with proprietary headset ports and bundled adaptors it seems like the message has gotten through: HTC is to embrace the 3.5mm jack. This hugely welcome news comes courtesy of MobileCrunch who were told by HTC directly that:
"The vast majority of devices we launch after Hero will have a 3.5mm jack. Devices that we have already announced but that still come out after Hero will not necessarily be a part of this change."
So essentially we are talking only about yet to be announced handsets but quite frankly we'll take that if it does indeed signal a long term change of ethos from the company. In fact, it seems such an obvious move that we can't believe it has taken so long.
Let's this be a lesson to you handset makers: common sense it'll get you in the end...
In related and sadder news I can shoot down hopes that the new HTC Hero Sense user interface will be coming to earlier Android handsets such as G1 and Magic.
Speaking to HTC I was told it was "fundamentally incompatible" and an update would not be made available in any official form. That said, HTC did recognise determined coders would likely be able to hack it onto these smartphones but remained sceptical they would ever get a true user experience. Doh.
