HP Lists nVidia GPU Problem-Affected Notebooks

We know that some of nVidia's notebook GPUs are breaking, as confirmed with Dell issuing a BIOS patch (if just turning a fan on permanently is a 'patch') to help avert any problems. Now HP has posted up a full list of all 21 if its system that may be affected by this same problem, and offered up a BIOS fix of its own.

The ranges in question include the HP Pavilion dv2000-, dv6000- and dv9000-series and the Compaq Presario V3000- and V6000- series. HP says it has "taken appropriate actions for any HP notebook products that use the known affected nVidia chips". System on the, rather long, list of possible succumbers to the issue are being covered by an extended warranty and will be replaced if required - no doubt helped by nVidia stumping up cash to cover such events.

The full list of laptops with possibly-faulty GPUs is as follows:

Symptoms, as listed by HP, oddly enough include such tell-tale signs of failure such as no video output on either the notebook's screen or an external monitor and a the device failing to start.

Given this emerging trend, we expect Asus, MSI, Acer and the rest to have listed all their faulty notebooks by the end of the week.

I have an acer aspire 5920g with the 8600m and the fan just will not quit. The unit can get very hot at times and some stickers on the back have begun to melt.

My notebook has died because of the problem GPU but HP refuses to service it. I am not alone and you can find a growing thread of angry HP owners at http://forums11.itrc.hp.com...

I am having virtually the same problems with a TX1260ea laptop with an AMD processor although, speaking to HPs UK Support Centre yesterday, I was clearly advised that the TX Series laptops are NOT INCLUDED in the list of units with the faulty nVidia GPU chips. They stated that TXs are not included because:

ONLY 2 or 3 out of 5 are experiencing the problem so... THEY PRESUMABLY REGARD THIS FAILURE RATE AS ACCEPTABLE!

I asked to speak to the support manager, but was put through to the complaints centre, where I was told categorically that I would have to pay for the repair and if I was not happy that I should call Trading Standards. The Trading Standards website (www.tradingstandards.gov.uk) state the following:

When you buy goods from a trader, you enter into a contract, which is controlled by many laws including, the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended by the Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994 and the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002). The law gives you certain statutory rights, including that the goods are of satisfactory quality, as described and fit for their purpose. If things go wrong when you purchase goods, you may be entitled to ask for a full refund, compensation, or a repair or replacement. Any guarantee provided is extra to your rights under the Sale of Goods Act.

Whilst HP reminded me that my laptop is 2 months out of warranty, the Sale of Goods Act might suggest that the warranty is irrelevant if the goods were not of satisfactory quality in the first instance.
