HP Berlin 2008: HP Unveils New TouchSmart PC

UPDATED - HP Berlin 2008: HP Unveils New TouchSmart PC

Having already released a TouchSmart PC in the UK, HP has returned with a new take on the touch-sensitive all-in-one PC, the TouchSmart IQ504, that looks set to bring a touch-sensitive "natural user interface" PC to anywhere in the house.

Based on a 22in display, the IQ504 is slimmer and far more compact than the previous model, giving it a similar form factor to the Apple iMac or the Dell XPS One. Unlike both, however, the IQ504 is based on Intel mobile technology, as opposed to desktop parts.

At the centre of it all is an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 running at 2.00GHz with a 667MHz front side bus and 2MB L2 Cache. Impressively, it'll come equipped with 4GBs of RAM and 64-bit Vista Home Premium - so most of that RAM will actually be used. You'll also benefit from a fast 320GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive, a slot-loading Super Multi DVD Burner, Draft-N Wi-Fi and a wireless keyboard and mouse, though graphics will be restricted to Intel X3100 integrated graphics.

Vitally, the TouchSmart IQ504 will feature a custom graphical user interface (GUI) designed to make it as easy as possible to navigate your music, videos and photos. HP executives likened it to the ease of use provided by an ATM and though we only managed to see it from a distance it looked impressive - we'll be taking a closer look later in the day. The machine will also feature an ‘ambient light' that'll illuminate the keyboard in the dark.

All in all it looks like a very neat system and the size should mean it could fit anywhere in the house, be it kitchen, living room or bedroom - did someone say downstairs toilet? No UK pricing or release details are available just yet, but you can take a look at the full specs below and more photos on the following pages.

excellent - I was very interested in the last version as a kitchen/diner pc

however I was put off by HP's obsession with underpowered AMD cpus that could not handle hd video files.

the Intel CPU should be enough for most work - although bit disappointed at the use of the T5750 - they should have used the Penryn based T8100 with its 800mhz FSB and 3Mb Cache.

the X3100 video should be fine but will use a chunk of that 4Gb memory - which makes the 64bit OS a bit less useful

according to Engadget specs are:

HP announces the $1,299 TouchSmart IQ504 (PC) and $1,499 TouchSmart IQ506 (PC with TV tuner). Arguably, the thinner, touchier, bigger, 22-inch all-in-ones deserve better. Inside the 2.6-inch thick chassis you'll find a 500GB disk, 256MB of NVIDIA GeForce 9300 M HS HD graphics, 802.11n WiFi, and 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo T5850 processor thumping through the cycles. Launching in 17 countries next month including the UK, Japan, and the US

so is this a case of UK downgrade + price inflation...???

please let us know TR...

Have no idea yet, but will endeavour to find out. Often the worst place to find out these sorts of things is at the launch event - paradoxical but true. I can now confirm, however, that it's expected to launch at around &#1631099inc vat in august or September.

As an aside, had a quick play with the interface and it is slick as hell. Expect hands-on impressions soon...

Thanks Andy - look forward to more info and your impressions when you get it

I was looking at the HP USA website - it seems the IQ504 has the specs of the model you have seen. However it is listed at $1299(+ tax) which means approx &#163400 'tax' on top for the privilege of buying one in the UK....grrr

Two bits of info I cant find however - the screen resolution (although most 22"ers are 1680x1050) and what video out port there is. I sure hope there is audio capable HDMI that would be ideal for connection to the TV as well...

I took a whole load of pics for the hands-on, including outputs, so you'll find out sooner rather than later. ;)
