HP announced two new smartphones at its press conference last night, the Pre 3 and its smaller brother the Veer, both of which will run webOS 2.2.

The Pre 3 is the successor to the Palm Pre 2 but without the Palm moniker (which now seems to be gone forever) but with some boosted specs. The Pre 3 has the familiar sliding portrait QWERTY keyboard but comes with a 3.6in, 800 x 480 display, which is a marked improvement over the previous model which had a resolution of 480 x 320. It has a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash, 720p HD video, a front-facing camera for video calling, mobile hotspot, and webOS 2.2. Powering all this is an impressive 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM 8x55 CPU. It also has 802.11a/b/g/n 5GHz, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, A-GPS, a 1230 mAh battery, HSPA+ and EVDO Rev A and 512MB DRAM.

The Pre 3 will be like a mini-companion for the TouchPad tablet which was also announced last night. The in-built Touchstone technology will allow for wireless charging as in previous incarnations of the Pre, but it will also be able to “talk” to the TouchPad in a feature called touch-to-share. This allows for the easy transfer of a website, document, song, text or call from the phone to the tablet – or vice versa – simply by tapping the two devices together. The Pre 3 is going to be available in the summer and no pricing or carriers have been announced as of yet.

If the Pre has taken the crown as HP’s flagship smartphone, the second phone announcement last night takes the crown as the smallest. The HP Veer is HP’s smallest ever smartphone but packs a punch despite its diminutive size. The Veer will take the place of the Palm Pixi Plus which was a bit of a let down in looks and performance. The Veer has a 2.6in 320 x 400 display, a 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of storage, an accelerometer, proximity and light sensors, Touchstone compatibility, and mobile hotspot support.

All of this will be powered by a Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7230 processor running at 800MHz and will run webOS 2.2 like the Pre 3. The big difference between this and the Pixi Plus is obviously the slide out portrait QWERTY keyboard but whether this will work with such a small form factor is another question. The phone will be released this spring but no pricing or carriers have yet been announced. (surprise, surprise).
