Google Updates Chrome, Adds SMS To Gmail

Google tends to make its releases in fits and starts - you'll get nothing for ages, then a sudden rash of news - and in the last few weeks the search giant has been fitting like crazy...

Consequently it is no surprise that today sees a pair of useful announcements with the we-still-don't-know-how-it-was-kept-so-well-under-everyone's-radar Chrome browser getting a new version and Gmail adding some handy new functionality.

Dealing with Chrome first, we'll see version '03.154.9' appearing in the next day or too and bringing with it a host of security fixes and performance improvements. Key most among them is eradicating a bug which potentially lets sites spoof addresses along with better stability with third party add-ons such as Adobe's ubiquitous Flash and Reader. Expect more soon too since latest reports show Chrome's one per cent market share to have slipped back to 0.7 per cent.

Next email gets a new spin following the Gmail canned responses last week with the addition of SMS functionality via the integrated Gchat IM client. Messages will appear with an individually generated 406 pre-faced number specific to your Gmail account and to enable it all users need do is visit the Labs tab inside Gmail settings and select it. Needless to say, the service is free.

So all very useful and furthermore, following the T-Mobile G1 UK release, don't expect Google to be going quiet anytime soon...
