Google Reveals Top Searches of 2008

Curious to know what we've all been searching for on Google this year? No, not the good stuff - the U Rated version. OK, then not so much but here it goes anyway...

In its '2008 Year-End Google Zeitgeist' the company has complied a vast array of results from the most popular:

FASTEST RISING GLOBAL QUERIES

Sarah Palin (*shudder*)

Beijing 2008

Facebook login

Tuenti (Spanish Social Networking Site)

Heath Ledger

Obama

Nasza Klasa (Poland Social Networking Site)

Wer Kennt Wen (German Social Networking Site)

Euro 2008

Jonas Brothers

Which have been broken down country-by-country:

MOST SEARCHED UK TERMS

Facebook

BBC

YouTube

eBay

Games

News

Hotmail

Bebo

Yahoo

Jobs (oh dear... could be set to rise next year, I fear)

As well as more quirky ones like:

MOST POPULAR POLITICIANS (UK)

Gordon Brown

David Cameron

Barack Obama

Tony Blair

Sarah Palin

John McCain

George Osborne

Alistair Darling

Boris Johnson

Nicolas Sarkozy

Recipes, tickets, finance terms and more are in there as well, so if you manage to find yourself some spare time I highly suggest you have a hearty perusal...

Yep, it's called Navigational Search and it really makes life hard when it comes to this sort of analysis. As hard as it might be to understand, tens of millions of internet users are using Google Search in a way a bit like the old-style AOL Keyword system ie type "youtube" into the box and it takes me there.

I have even seen people search for Google itself using this method out of pure habit (!)

It would appear being ranked #1 is perhaps more valuable than owning www.yourbrand.com

Why do people say "jesus christ!" when they likely don't even believe in him? Santa Clause! Pink elephants! Atheism!

Well, what I wanted to say would have been censored...
