Goodyear Rolls Into GPS Market

It seems anyone can make a self-branded GPS model these days and with Michelin and the RAC recently hopping aboard it seems only logical that tyre manufacturer Goodyear now wants in as well.

Scheduled for a formal announcement later this week is the company's debut range of GPS units - eight in all.

Details at this stage are thin on the ground, but I do know they will cover the full budget spectrum ranging from an entry level GPS keychain all the way to the typical 4.3in touchscreen giants. Traffic management, multimedia playback, connection to MSN Direct, Bluetooth handsfree controls and mobile phone pairing are all on the check list though how they will break down from model to model is currently unclear.

What is certainly newsworthy however is the rather fantastic look of the devices. The 'GY540' (above, left) for instance, has certainly been styled by someone who is a big fan of the iPhone, while the 'GY230' (above, right) has rubberised edges from extra durability. Some units - like the 'GY330' (below) - even feature tyre-like patterns craved into the rubber, a nice touch.

Naturally enough, there's no release information at this stage (though late Q1 / early Q2 seems a good bet) or pricing. Still, while this sector may be crammed to bursting, I think we can all agree: it could do with more pretty faces like these...
