It has been a long time since we wrote about a guitar on Trustedreviews, but this stunner has certainly made it worth the wait.

Following on from the innovative Optek Fretlight USB/LED Guitar isn't Fender, Washburn, Yamaha, Ibanez or any of the other more progressive manufacturers, but old smoke and blues traditionalist Gibson.

It has concocted a self tuning Les Paul which it dubs the 'Gibson Robot Guitar' (possibly named by someone over 60 methinks). A thorough video walkthrough can be see here, but in short (well not as short as saying it 'self tunes'): the Robot Guitar has a push-pull 'Master Control Knob' which can be pulled out and rotated to highlight any key. Once selected the knob pushes in and locks and user strums the keys while the robotic machine heads judge the existing pitch and adjust accordingly. It's that easy.

On the downside hardcore rockers will be quick to lecture bore tell you that learning to tune your guitar is a rite of passage for all players while the $899 price premium is going to scare off all by the most well heeled of musicians. On the other hand being able to quickly switch between alternative tunings seems like a real boon to this rusty old guitarist and as soon as I make my millions it will be mine.

The Gibson Robot Guitar launches in limited quantities on 7 December. Anyone who wants to become my best friend feel free to squeeze this into my Christmas stocking...
