Gateway GM5664 Hybrid HD Format Playing PC Unveiled

Whether it is inspired by the takeover by Acer or acting of its own volition, Gateway has been churning out some half-decent systems of late. Adding to the mix today it has produced yet another pair, on paper at least, offering an AMD spider-platform system with a price kept to a more than acceptable level.

The two systems are called the GM5664 and GT5662 and both are pretty similar, the main differentiators being slight spec changes giving the latter lesser performance and the addition of a Blu-ray/HD DVD combo drive to the former. Starting with the GM5664 we see a 2.3GHz Phenom 9600, a 1TB hard drive and a digital TV tuner. The GT5662 has a slightly slower 2.2GHz Phenom 9500, a mere 500GB hard drive space and looses the tuner.

Elsewhere both systems share the same parts, both packing 3GB RAM and an AMD ATI HD Radeon 2400 XT. The latter is probably the weak link in both the systems, while it will serve well for video decoding and so forth gaming is, realistically, not possible - making the comparatively powerful CPU seem like a bit of a waste. A card reader is also bundled into the chassis and though we have no shots of new systems at the moment, there's a fairly good chance it'll look like the system pictured above.

For video playback, from the hard drive, DVD and HD drives, and TV watching, though, the G5664 and GT5662 should both provide a decent solution and the respective $1150 (£600-ish) and $750 (£400-ish) price tags aren't to be sniffed at. All that is missing is a release date for the UK so keep your eyes open and your cheque book handy, especially in Tesco where many of Gateway's systems are sold.
