Well we were greatly excited about the Garmin nüvifone when it was first announced. The problem is that was almost one year ago... still, all good things?
Could be, because scurrying out the back door late on Friday evening was Garmin's official submission documents for passing the nüvifone through the FCC - you know, that US commission which tests and OKs electronics products nearly ready for release.
Predictably, little was given away during the submission but we did learn a few interesting nuggets. Firstly that Garmin has international plans for the handset since it comes with Bands II (1900MHz) and V (850MHz) technology and secondly, that it is being referred to as the 'G60' so this could turn out to be just the first of a range - let's hope so.
Now according to Garmin's most recent nuviphone release schedule in July we were told to expect the handset in 1H 2009 (it had been Q3 2008, then Q4 2008) but could the FCC submission suggest some light at the end of the tunnel? Certainly once a device hits this process it tends to signal a virtually finished product so we're hoping it may arrive in Q1 rather than Q2.
Of course now there's just that tricky carrier acceptance to get over - hmmmn, maybe the nuviphone G70/v2.0 will be the one...
