Gamer Downloads Halo 3, Gets Banned Until 9999AD

Halo 3 has been a long time in coming and although we now have a little over two weeks to wait for the full release, it seems that a fan in America couldn't wait that long and decided to jump into the latest beta build of Halo 3, referred to as 'Epsilon' using a glitch being referred to as 'the two-controller exploit'.

The guy in question, known only by his Xbox Live Gamer Tag 'Scar' has now found himself locked out of his account until the 12th of December 9999. Claiming he was given the Epsilon build by a friend (known as the internet?) apparently he managed six hours of play-time before finding himself kicked out of the game every couple of minutes before discovering his account had been banned from Xbox Live the next morning.

'Scar' isn't the only one, though; apparently many other people who also used the exploit have found themselves on the receiving ends of 7,992 year bans. Microsoft reps aren't allowed to officially respond, but a Bungie staff member is quoted as saying the screenshots of the message "looked legit" also adding "Sorry, great, great, great, great grandkids".

The moral of the story is pretty clear: don't pirate games software from Microsoft and then use your Live account to play unless you plan to live a really long time. No doubt it's fair to say that the gamer concerned had it coming, something gives us the feeling that future would-be-hackers may heed this as a pretty conclusive warning from Microsoft. Still, at least the hackers can legally play the single player on the 25th when the game is officially released.
