Free WiFi for a Week Thanks to Skype

Skype has announced that it is going to pay for everyone to have free wireless internet access across the UK for the duration of the first ever Internet Week Europe.

Internet Week Europe comes to London from next Monday, November 8 until Friday, November 12 and was set up to “celebrate the very best of Europe's digital industry” with events hosted by the BBC, Yahoo!, Creative Review, Google, Lonely Planet, Channel 4 and more.

To celebrate this event Skype has decided to enable free public Wifi via Skype Access throughout the UK for the duration of the festival. Skype Access enables instant Internet access over WiFi through public hotspots, directly through Skype. While the events are limited to the London area, the whole of the UK will benefit from this generosity.

In order to access the free Wifi, you’ll need to follow a couple of simple steps:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Skype on your computer, laptop or mobile.

2. Sign in to Skype and select an available public access WiFi network.

3. You’ll get an automatic pop-up message if the one you select is not compatible with Skype Access, so you can select another.

While the purpose of the week seems to focus on industry experts and insiders who will look at how the internet is used currently and where the future lies, the free WiFi will make sure that everyone benefits from this first running of the event.

Nice 1 Skype, won't get much use out of it though as I'm currently in China, but I sometimes use Skype to access wi-fi hot spots in airports all over the world and it works seamlessly as you pay per minute from your Skype credit which saves having to buy airtime through different providers. Quite a big fan of Skype and subscribe to their unlimited telephone calls as well, very reasonable.
