In an apparent effort to give me carpal tunnel syndrome trying to keep up with reviews of its vast range, Samsung has just announced four new cameras, bringing its total to an astonishing forty different models, more than any other major manufacturer.

The first of the new batch is the budget-priced S85, which features an 8.2 megapixel CCD, 5x optical zoom lens and the now ubiquitous face detection technology, for accurate focusing and exposure in portrait mode. It also has a 2.5-in LCD monitor, maximum sensitivity of 1600 ISO, a maximum shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second and 20MB of internal memory. It is compatible with SDHC memory cards up to 4GB and runs on two AA batteries. The S85 will be available from the end of August 2007 at an RRP of £119.99

It is followed by the stylish L83T, which is also an 8.2-megapixel model, but this time with a 3x zoom lens. It also features face detection technology, as well as a 2.5-in monitor, maximum sensitivity of 1600 ISO, a maximum shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second and 19MB of internal memory. It has an interesting-sounding video mode capable of filming in resolutions from 320x240 to 800x592 at up to 30 frames per second in AVI (MPEG-4) format, with mono audio. It also features Samsung’s “proprietary ASR image stabilisation system”, although it was not clear from the press information whether this is a mechanical (moving lens or CCD-shift) system, or merely an ISO-based system. The L83T will be available from August 2007 with a two year warranty at an RRP of £179.

Also announced are two new cameras in the easy-to-use L series, the 7 megapixel L730 and the 8 megapixel L830. These compact aluminium-bodied cameras also feature face-detection technology (doesn’t everything?). Both models also feature 3x optical zoom, a bright 2.5” LCD display and a suite of advanced video and editing features. Specs include 1/1500th sec maximum shutter speeds, ISO 1600 maximum sensitivity and 16MB internal memory. Both cameras accept SD cards, although it’s not clear if they will also accept SDHC. The Samsung L730 and L830 will both be available from the end of August with an RRP of £119 for the L730 and £149 for the L830.
