First Vista 'Only' Game Cracked For XP

For those gamers who like their FPSes distinctly mediocre and have shelled out hundreds of pounds on Vista to do so I have some bad news for you: those scruffy cheap skate Windows XP users who laughed at you at the time are laughing even harder now...

News has filtered through on this last week of June that the first week of June released and infinitely forgettable Shadowrun has already been hacked to work on DirectX 9 and therefore Windows XP. P2P fans' favourite Razer1911 are the team responsible for the breakthrough which it achieved simply by overwriting specific files in the game's installation folder.

Such an basic approach will surprise many, not least Falling Leaf Systems (not Falling Leaf Studios as many have hilariously been reporting) which has been trying to write a piece of software to achieve similar results (though on all DirectX 10 games) for many months now. Fully aware of this, Razer1911 posted notes with the crack saying:

"Tired of waiting for Falling Leaf to produce drivers so that you can play Shadowrun in XP? The wait is over, because Razor1911 already has the remedy! Yes, you read right. This game will also function in Windows XP."

Little is known about how stable/functional Shadowrun on XP is at this stage but it will be interesting to see whether legal copies of the game can be adapted and still retain features such as the cross platform PC/Xbox 360 online gaming. Only one way to find out...

So all in all a great start for Vista and DirectX 10. We have the forgettable, now-DirectX 9 friendly, Shadowrun and the antiquated port of Halo 2 (which clearly needed the best available technological platform for Windows games). Some might say Vista and DirectX 10 are in something of a crisis... other – smarter people – would say it is in need of Crysis...
