There's a problem with launching Windows Mobile-based smartphones at Mobile World Congress this year. It's called Windows Phone and if your latest and greatest handsets are only sporting Windows Mobile 6.1 that doesn't help. Especially if they are your first ever smartphones...
To be fair to Acer, what we are seeing here are handsets from the roadmap of last year's Eten purchase and Windows Phone won't be out for some time, but Microsoft really doesn't help its partners here - does it? Still, here we have the 'Tempo Series' made up of the 'X960', 'F900', DX900 and 'M900'. New badge aside, the DX900 isn't new so we'll skip on the remaining trio.
The undoubted highlight is the F900 which sports a 3.8in WVGA display and HSDPA/HSUPA along with WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth 2.0. A 3MP camera is less impressive, however, as is the lack of a 3.5mm jack, and at 106 x 60.5 x 17mm it is a hefty handset particularly given the lack of a physical sliding Qwerty keyboard. Still, it packs nippy 533MHz CPU and should keep the business world fairly happy.
If physical keyboards are your thing however then the M900 should be right up your street as it offers all the same features of the F900 plus upping the camera to a more tasty five megapixels with autofocus and flash. Still no 3.5mm jack and at 119 x 62 x 17.1mm and 188g you'll need to reinforce those pockets. That said, the styling is impressive.
Lastly is the X960, more typical looking handset with 2.8in VGA display, 3.2MP camera, WiFi, GPS and HSDAP/HSUPA. At 106.4 x 59 x 13.7mm and 131g it still isn't exactly a featherweight but you do otherwise get the same 533MHZ CPU and feature set as its bigger brethren.
Availability and pricing is as yet unknown, but I've a particular interest in the latter as Eten was never able to land a network deal to get its handsets subsidised. If Acer can use its greater influence to pull this off then it'll be flying...
In related news Acer is also said to be prepping its first Android handset for Q2. We'll have them in the shells of the M900 and F900 if you don't mind lads.
