First 4MP Windows Mobile Smartphone Emerges

There’s no good reason why smartphones – with their extra size and processing power – should pack inferior cameras to their mobile phone counterparts but they do, so Voxtel has decided to redress the balance.

If you are wondering exactly who Voxtel is then you’re not alone, so am I (its Russian), but by becoming the first company to product a WM based device with a four megapixel camera it is unlikely to remain in the shadows for much longer.

Called the ‘W740’ is also packs in the usual 240 x 320 touch screen display (2.4 inches in this case) and makes an obvious play for the style freak by blatantly copying Motorola’s classic – if overrated IMHO – keypad. Speaking of which, the major downside to the W740 is that is doesn’t pack a QWERTY thumb board, something I’ve deemed essential since swapping over to a T-Mobile Vario II (aka HTC TYTN) a few months back.

Bluetooth and push email make it onboard but there is no WiFi or 3G so calling the W740 a mixed bag would be like pouring Corn Flakes, Gravy and Jack Daniels into a sack and giving it a good shake. The 200MHz OMAP730 processor isn’t exactly getting my juices flowing either but it does sport the usual 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM memory configurations and it will make headlines for obvious reasons.

Of course given that Voxtel is Russian and seems to let about as many of its handsets escape to other countries as the Iron Curtain did citizens there is unlikely to be much chance we’ll get our hands on one. Still, it does give a good indication that smartphone manufacturers are turning their attention towards more consumer grabbing features and that can only be a good thing.
