Fennec Reaches Alpha Status On Windows Mobile

It seems to have taken an age, but finally we have the first Fennec Windows Mobile alpha...

Previously restricted to Fennec alpha on the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, the portable edition of Mozilla Firefox now finds itself on a mass market mobile platform though again restricted to just one specific handset. This time it is the HTC Touch Pro and while Mozilla does acknowledge this limitation it does admit "We will be adding support for more devices in future releases."

"Now that we have gotten to this point, the fun really begins," Mozilla said in a blog post. "If you would like to help us by testing or developing the product, please visit the Mobile Firefox wiki. There you will find some information that we hope is useful in helping you find where to 'plug in' to the effort. As always, you can find us on irc in the #mobile channel."

Key improvements to this version of Fennec (the 13th at last count!) see JeMalloc integration for better memory management and UI controls which have been rebuilt to be entirely CSS based. The latter should make for better compatibility with different screen sizes and resolutions. Meanwhile users will also find Firefox favourites such as the Awesome Bar, RRS feeds, tabbed browsing and - come full launch - those all key third party extensions. A Fennec desktop edition (pictured) also remains available for curious types.

If that's you, then you know what to do...
