Late last week all-conquering Facebook decided this should come to an end and it has taken the first steps to attract its own raft of audiophiles with 'Music On Facebook'.
Just like MySpace, the service enables musicians and bands to create their own free Facebook pages and stream their latest music and videos. Automated mail shots can be sent to users who declare themselves 'Fans' (ie, join this profile/group hybrid) and in-turn they can post messages to the artists and even 'Dedicate' tracks to fellow Facebook friends.
Intriguingly, Facebook has also tied the service into iTunes after making an agreement with Apple. Consequently, users who express an interest in buying an artist/band's material are taken directly to their corresponding iTunes' page (if applicable). Sneaky.
100s of artists have already set-up their Facebook profiles to help launch the service including the likes of Coldplay, Shakira, Dido, Justin Timberlake and the Foo Fighters while the Dave Matthews Band agreed to a case study (pdf warning).
Given the momentum behind Facebook currently it seems difficult to see this becoming anything other than a major success. MySpace, start worrying...
