Evesham Demonstrates Its Workstation Acumen

Occasionally it must be really nice to just cut loose on a system and see how powerful you can make it. Well, it appears that is what UK company Evesham has done with its latest workstation.

Setting you back a cool £3,523.83 including VAT, the Acumen DC10 is a dual core Opteron 275 (2.2GHz) based beast with a whopping 2GB of DDR400 RAM, two 250GB SATA 7,200rpm hard drives and - to top it off - a professional ATI FireGL V5100, 128MB PCI Express graphics card (which, before you ask, it not designed primarily for games but does incorporate an X800 Pro VPU!).

Of course, these are just the highlights. The side players, however, are just as flash in their own way. There’s a dual layer Sony DVD rewriter, Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, 7.1 audio, tasty housing in the shape of a Chieftec DX-01B-D-U case, 360W Tagan TG420-U01 PSU and the motherboard is no less than a spanking new Asus K8N-DL. A choice of Windows XP or Windows XP 64 is yours on order, while a two year on-site (three years return to base) warranty comes as standard.

As you might expect from this kind of hardware, Evesham is boasting some pretty high performance figures. Most notably, it claims its latest baby’s processor alone will hammer the previous single core Opteron 252 by nearly 70 per cent (based on the SPECjbb2000 benchmark).

Whether the Acumen DC10 can live up to this sort of hype remains to be seen, but given that we have one beating a thunderous path to our labs right now we shouldn’t have to wait long to find out.

If you can’t hang on, you’ll be pleased to know the DC10 is scaring every computer it sits next to in stores now. Otherwise, expect a review of this devil creation soon.

Makes us proud to be British!
