Epson has announced a new dedicated film scanner, the F-3200. It is a significant release as other manufacturers, such as Canon, are moving away from dedicated film scanner and instead relying on flatbed technology. The F-3200 has been expected for a while in Europe having been up for some time on the Japanese web site www.i-love-epson.co.jp for some time.

The scanner is aimed at professionals and the dedicated amateur photographers, who want to combine speedy scanning with very high quality. It can handle reflective prints of up to 4in x 6in in addition to 35mm film through to 5in x 4in sheet film.

Photographers will be able to scan 35mm and medium format film in batches and at the same time remove dust and scratches from images. A built-in LCD screen enables photographers to preview scanned images quickly and easily. The F-3200 is also the first film scanner to integrate a memory card reader so users can scan directly from memory cards without a PC or Mac.

Here is a summary of the F3200 features

• 3200dpi film scanner with batch scanning
• Includes film holders for
- 35mm strip and mounted transparencies, panoramic film, medium and large format film up to 4 x 5in
- Reflective media up to 4 x 6in
• Dedicated lamp system for negative and positive film
• USB 2.0 Hi-Speed and (FireWire) connectivity
• Scan directly to memory cards
