E3: Wii Gets New Controllers & Games

The Nintendo Wii has recently found itself in something of a conundrum. It is incredibly successful because it is so innovative, but it is so innovative that software designers don't know what to do with it. Typically then, Nintendo used E3 to prove if you want something done properly...

It has unveiled three new accessories for the Wii and three exciting new games titles.

First up is the 'Wii Zapper' (name not finalised) a frame – for want of a better word – which allows a Wii remote and nunchuk to be locked into a machine gun style configuration for first person shooters. Cue cool game number one: 'Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles'. The Zapper will be packaged with this game or available separately for around $20.

Next is the Wii 'Wheel' (name not finalised either), another frame which this time clips onto just the Wii remote to provide a more realistic driving experience. This will come bundled with exciting game number two: 'Mario Kart for Wii' – a huge draw for the console and one I'm sure everyone will be dying to get their hands on.

Finally we have the Wii 'Balance Board' (name, guess what?), a floor exercise pad which combines with its primary title (and cool game number three) 'Wii Fit' to offer a wide array of balance, dance and yoga based workouts and even push ups thanks to its motion detection and pressure sensitivity. Wii Fit will also include a fitness tracker which keeps a record of your BMI, weight, posture and general health.

I suspect this trio of hardware accessories will find significant use beyond their paired titles (which themselves suggest a long shelf life) and may finally expand the limited minds of many current Wii games developers...

Sheesh - it's like they have to be led by the hand.
