So Long US 60GB PS3

Although we may have just criticised Sony for not bringing the PS3 price cuts offered in the US over to Europe, it seems that that particular deal may not be as clear cut or as pro-American as it seemed. While the price cut is still going ahead, it will not be a permanent affair but rather this deal is intended as a stock-clearing incentive to allow shelf space for Sony’s new 80GB model.

Once remaining stocks of 60GB models run out a new 80GB model will take residence on US shelves with a $599 RRP (just under £300). However to compensate us British buyers Sony will at least remove the hardware emulation previously included in US PS3s and replace it with the software version we have been subjected to all along.

It has been confirmed by David Reeves, SCEE president, that there are currently no plans for an 80GB model to launch in Europe. Of course Sony has a great reputation recently of flat-out denying speculations that turns out to be correct mere days later, so I'll take this opportunity to say that I have it on very good authority that there are plans for a 500GB, £100 PS3 to be announced next week.
