E3 2008: Final Fantasy Launching On Xbox 360 And PS3

E3 2008: Final Fantasy Launching On Xbox 360 And PS3

PlayStation fans, today is a bad day because it is my sad duty to inform you that Final Fantasy XIII will not be a Sony exclusive title. In an announcement that is sure to shock just about everyone, Microsoft has announced at E3 that the game will be released simultaneously on the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3. Good news for Xbox owners, less so for the PS3 die-hards who have been waiting for FFXIII to come along and prove just how good the PS3 is - exclusively.

As well has handing Microsoft a surely much-welcome PR victory over Sony, the news that Final Fantasy will see an Xbox 360 release may well help the consoles fortunes in Japan. Traditionally PlayStation territory, Japanese sales of the Xbox 360 haven't picked up to the extent of other territories - Japanese gamers prefer games such as Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy.

Considering many potential console buyers will likely be waiting just for Final Fantasy XIII to arrive before investing in a next-gen system, and given the Xbox 360 is significantly cheaper than the PS3 (even if it is also annoyingly louder when running) it's hard to see why anyone wanting to play a single game would choose the PS3 over the Xbox 360. Even if the latter is likely to require multiple discs, not having the benefit of Blu-ray.

Frankly, Sony is going to have to come up with something incredible to tell us, if it is to have any hope of saving face at this year's E3.

i for one just can't think of a reason as to why japanese gamers will opt to buy an xbox just to play ff xiii while they can do it on their ps3s (japan has always been a playstation territory as far as xbox vs playstation rivalry is concerned) . and almost all of them already own a ps3 as the true next gen gaming machine (wii is fun & games only, i look in a different direction when i see adverts of lame-brain footballers and 'celebrities' are trying to shake sticks at televisions).

maybe you just read too much into this news and it seems that you yourself are a closet fanboy of xbox (which is cool by todays standards). so happy after this announcement that you're asuming that people in japan will buy xbox machines just to play a game that they can play on their existing machine as well. wow, i mean... wow.

even in the west people who have traditionally been ff players will choose ps3 over xbox any day of the week (you should know why and if don't ask stu). even if they just want to play this 'one' last game they can at least start using the ps3 as a blu-ray player afterwards and last time i checked you cannot watch a film in true high-definition on that noisy windmill of a machine called xbox... yeah! 360 and no matter how elite is it. lame.

it hurt though. you got that right. we already knew but how this has happened remains in the shadows (spare the supid theories). anyway who's playing mgs4... in 2008.

Closet Xbox fan is a bit harsh, you do realise that Hugo owns a PS3 and preaches the PS3 benefits over the 360 at every opportunity?! :-)

I dont know the numbers to be honest, but I doubt if everybody in japan has a PS3, and I would thin it very likely that people would only buy a console for one game (especially one the size of Final Fantasy) and so would go for the cheapest option, that being the 360 at the moment, meaning that Xbox may see a rise in sales.

This, combined with the news that the xbox will be able to install games onto the hard drive so will mean faster load times when compared to the PS3's more sluggish blu-ray drive means that the Xbox is on a high IMO! Hopefully sony will hit back ASAP...

that's a knock out blow. MGS4 didn't really give the ps3 the sales boost they were looking for, and now that final fantasys gone do they really have any hugely followed exclusives left? Maybe Gran Turismo, thats it. And don't forget the xbox has GOW2 coming.

Think what happened the last time this series spread onto a different platform- from nintendo to sony. Sony outsold nintendo 3:1.

I wonder if Microsoft will release a special bundle like they did with Blue Dragon?

Also it is more than possible to watch a true 1080p movie on the 360

First: FFXIII still is a PS3 exclusive in Japan, so next time pay more attention.

Second: PS3 still has FF Versus XIII as exclusive, that if launched before FFXIII may be as importandt as FFXIII itself.

Third: A game like FF with all the cut scenes will require a huge amount of space, so you can expect multiple discs in the X360 console, wich will look just stupid considering the PS3 version will be one disc only.

Four: FinalFantasy has been allways a game related to the Playstation Brand and this time there is no "exclusive" DLC to microsoft, so I don't see the PS2 owners changing to M$ that easily, they know the PS brand well, they are used to the other PS franchises like GT, GOW, Wipeout, etc...

I can't see many people buying a X360 just to play FFXIII when it is released, yes, because it won't be before hollyday 2009 (with luck), and by that time PS3 will be cheaper, will have better franchises and Bluray will be more popular.

FFXIII on X360 is more a moral shock then anything else, in the end it won't be that important for X360, and since it will be exclusive to PS3 in Japan I don't see FFXIII as a hardware seller to Microsoft.

I've been an avid gamer for soo many years and have bought almost every console released in the past. Before the current gen consoles were 'released' I was in two minds about which to go for, I bought the 360 as it was released first with the continuing thought that I'd buy a PS3 when a game would 'WOW' me as the two consoles are very similar in terms of graphics and interface... I think that until I can play GT5, Killzone2 and Resistance2, I'll wait and stay with my X360. Seeing as I&#8217ll be able to install the games onto the hard drive, I&#8217ll have a considerably quieter hoover in my room.

I've always liked the FF series and welcome it to the X360... it just saves me more money not buying another games console.

Multi discs?! Not bothered me before, as long as the games good, that's all that matters.

Being a PC fan, I for one was holding off buying a PS3 until such time as the new FF was released.

Now that its multi-platform? who knows.. may choose the cheaper XBOX360 console now.

i doubt sony would be in a position to lop a bit more off the price of the ps3 - it's already a very cheap blu-ray player in its own rights. (yay to mrdoogso fro being a pc gamer :D). considering the final fantasy series has always been a closed ended RPG series i can't see the need for downloadable content, though a trade station (like mognet and every other final fantasy game on the ds) where people can trade items might be a possibility.

@ Jawad: Easy now fella, it's just a game. Leave those rants at IGN where they belong. :)

I have no love for Microsoft or Sony, they are hardly worth vehemently defending. But consumer choice and multi-platform releases are not bad things in my book, so this seems like good news for gamers.

Personally, I think Hugo is spot on with his assertions of this affecting PS3 sales and being a PR problem for Sony.

I agree with the sentiment in other comments that this probably won't be a massive console shifter for MS, but I can see this hurting Sony's hardware sales globally. There are going to be a portion of gamers out there who would have gone out and bought a PS3 solely (or at least primarily) for the next big FF title - the series is famed for boosting device sales. Exactly how many people are in that situation is anyone's wild guess, but I don't think the number will be insignificant given the popularity of previous FF titles and the Playstation's adoption not being as strong so far in this generation.

Politically, it's a slap in the face. The fact that this headline and the usual heated flamewars are cropping up on all the tech and gaming sites is evidence enough of that. Final Fantasy is one of the big exclusive franchises Sony have enjoyed a lot of success with since FFVII.

That said, SCE seem to have a remarkable ability to take these sort of PR hits on the chin and continue selling a lot of consoles, so I wouldn't say it's that bad for them. It's not like Microsoft managed to pinch an exclusivity deal for the 360, which would have really been a kick in the family jewels for Sony.

Keep your pants up fanboys, open your eyes and start seeing as it is. FFXIII going multiplatforms is a great opportunity for all gamers, final. No PS3 is better, no 360 is better. They all have their pros and cons. We're lucky enough to own all three platforms, and personally, I'd choose the 360 version (even if it is multi-discs). Oh, may I also point out that Final Fantasy only got hooked to the playstation brand from episode 7, wasn't always theirs...

Just wanted to mention that the reason I have observed that the PS3 is way popular in Japan is because of the games. I'm in Japan right now doing an internship and I took a look in a bunch of game stores here. They have a ton of Japanese only games, a lot based on anime. The XBOX just can't compete because it doesn't have all of these Japanese games. Also, Japanese have high respect for products made in Japan. Overall I would say Japanese gamers are just quite a bit different from US gamers.
