E-TEN Glofiish X800 Takes Gold

Though it was only the first day of this year’s show, Glofiish’s first Pocket PC to feature HSDPA was awarded one of 25 Best Choice of Computex awards yesterday. Now, normally this sort of announcement would fill a tired old (at least that’s how I feel) hack like me with suspicion but it would seem that on this occasion the award was chosen wisely.

As well as HSDPA, the new PDA features a front facing camera for video calling, GPS support - courtesy of the built-in SiRF Star III chipset, Wi-Fi, and a high-resolution VGA screen. There is 250MB of flash ROM and 64MB of SDRAM onboard and this is expandable via a standard Micro-SD slot. You can also take a few snaps with the 2.0 Megapixel Auto-Focus camera and send them to local devices via Bluetooth. The processor powering all this lot is the Samsung SC3 2442, which runs at 500MHz, and the operating system is Windows Mobile 6. The piece de resistance, though, is that all this fits in a package that is only 15.8mm thick. So, from a quick glance there doesn’t seem to be anything this device hasn’t got going for it!

All the major phone companies in the UK are said to be interested in carrying the device so there should be a reasonable chance your chosen provider will have it. The only catch seems to be the long lead time before actual release as the X800 won’t be with us until the latter part of the year. Either way, as always, I’ll leave it to Sandra to put the X800 through its paces when it does finally hit retail.

Glofiish also mentioned that existing X500 and X700 owners will be able to upgrade their PDAs to Windows Mobile 6 free of charge. Just pop along to their website and follow the links http://www.glofiish.com/.
