Windows Mobile-powered Smartphone owners now have another satellite navigation system to choose from, with the announcement from Destinator that it is to release a GPS bundle for compatible phones. This will compete with other products from the likes of TomTom and ALK.

Destinator SP is comprised of a Royaltek Bluetooth GPS receiver and the Destinator SP software. This is installed on the mobile phone via a memory card in SD, MMC, MiniSD, or RS-MMC format. The pocket-sized antenna connects to the phone wirelessly via Bluetooth.

The software includes maps of the UK and can be upgraded to add maps of other European countries. Routes can be displayed in either 2D or 3D. Taking advantage of the fact that it's mobile phone based, users can send text messages to other mobiles containing the person’s location. Should the recipient not have Destinator SP, however, the text message will still show the address and geo data. Destinator says that this can save valuable time if a car has been involved in an accident or is in need of roadside repair. The navigation software can also take addresses from the phone’s Outlook address book.

Destinator says that its SP system is compatible with all Windows Mobile-powered Smartphones, including recent models like the Orange SPV C500, Motorola MPx220 and Sagem My-S8.

The standard package Destinator SP contains the navigation software, maps of UK and Ireland preinstalled on a 256MB memory card, a Bluetooth GPS receiver including car charger and a universal car mount. The recommended reseller price for the full package will be around £200, including VAT, and will be available during February from online resellers.
