Dell Unveils $289 20in Widescreen LCD

We love LCDs, we love widescreen LCDs, we love large widescreen LCDs but we don’t like to pay through the nose for the privilege of owning one. Step forward Dell with its latest blockbusting deal.

Announced today is the 20in E207WFP, a stripped down version of Dell’s existing 20 incher: the 2007WFP, which makes a number of compromises but slaughters preconceived ideas on price.

Out the window are luxuries like the inbuilt USB hub and older connections like S-video and composite but vitals like the 1680 x 1050 native resolution and DVI with HDCP remain. Furthermore, the E207WFP boasts a lightening quick 5ms response time which makes mincemeat out of the 2007WFP’s 16ms rating.

Yet the most impressive thing about Dell’s lean and mean new screen (I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it) is the quite frankly remarkable $289 (£155) sticker price. We don’t yet know if/what compromises have been made in the panel to achieve such a breakthrough cost or what its European mark up with be, but if Dell can make us half as happy as it did with the 2405FPW or the 2407WFP then this could be a decisive moment in bringing large LCDs to the general public.

I’ll pop back and update you once we get some UK info, which hopefully shouldn’t be long since Dell traditionally doesn’t put much of a gap between announcements and releases. Watch this space…

Update: Thanks to eagle eyed reader Ben we now have a link to the official E207WFP US product page here. Can't be long before it pops up in the UK now...

Update 2: Looks like those potential savings didn't translate to the UK. Dell has finally listed the E207WFP here for a massive £262.70, almost the same figure as the dollar price. No fair! Thanks to reader Thomas for the helpful, if unpleasant, update.
