Dell Shows New Flagship XPS Laptop

What better way to debut the latest flagship mobile GPU than in Dell’s latest flagship notebook. Here’s the skinny on both…

In a post-modern-mislead-you-kind-of-way I’ll pretend to start you with the XPS M1710 notebook only to point out that nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX graphics card is part of it. As such this GPU is a beauty too, fabbed at 90nm and processing 1bn vertices and 12bn pixels per second. A slightly cut down version, the 7900 GS, is also available and it manages 656m vertices and 7.5bn pixels per second. The former will come equipped with a massive 512MB of VRAM, the latter 256MB. Sadly geektastic details like the core and memory clock rates were curiously left out of the announcement.

As for the rest of the laptop it is wonderfully and spectacularly over the top equipped with a choice of Intel Core Duo processors up to the 2.16GHz T2600, another nail biter between a 100GB 7,200RPM or 120GB 5,400RPM HDD, space for 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a whopping 17in WUXGA (1920 x 1200) display, high definition stereo sound with integrated subwoofer and dual layer DVD rewriter. This is only just scratching the surface too given there’s integrated g wireless, six USB2.0 ports, DVI and component video, a 5-in-1 memory card reader, optional integrated TV card tuner and all the other usual odds and sods that you can just tick off right now.

A special edition red backed XPS is also available and I had a play with the Dell configurator and managed to max out the M1710 to an incredible $6,719. And no, that didn’t include external extras like hard drives or routers or even any Microsoft Office software! Want to put yourself in the poor house? Here’s how to do it with a smile on your face…
