If information filtering down the grapevine is anything to go by, Dell may well be the latest manufacturer to work its way onto the long list of those preparing a system to dog the footsteps of Asus's Eee PC. According to Dow Jones, Compal Electronics confirmed it has been engaged to produce between one and two million low-cost systems for Dell. For those not familiar with them, Compal is one of the larger contract notebook manufacturers.
While that by itself doesn't mean that Dell would be launching an Eee PC-a-like system, comments from Michael Dell in reference to the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC certainly do.
Specifically Dell said that "We will introduce a similar laptop." Also commenting: "Stay tuned, we will have some interesting products coming in that space over the next two quarters." At least according to Endadget - and we have no reason to doubt them.
Truth be told we're not surprised to hear that Dell wants a slice of the success-pie that Asus has baked up with the Eee PC. Having already made moves to add Linux to ‘normal' notebooks Dell may be in a better position than some manufacturers to configure a low cost, low spec system. Nonetheless, the company will need to offer something special if it wants to attract customers away from the many rivals in what is becoming an increasingly saturated market.
