Dell Launches Vostro 2510

With the recent launch of Centrino 2, it would be easy for us to overlook any laptop line seeing a refresh not based on the new platform from Intel. However, Dell's new Vostro systems, while based on old tech, are still quite capable of grabbing our attention - even if only on an aesthetic basis.

For a business environment-geared notebook the new 15.4in Vostro 2510 looks surprisingly un-businesslike, in a good way. Forget the tweaks seen earlier this year, this is a complete reworking, with glossy red outer casing and the same slot loading optical drive as seen on the Studio range. Specs wise everything is, as mentioned, less eye-catching but look like this:
- Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5670 (1.8GHz, 2MB L2 cache), T5870 (2.0GHz, 2MB cache) or T9500 (2.6GHz, 6MB cache)
- 2GB, 3GB or 4GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
- 15.4in 1,440 x 900 or 1,920 x 1,200 panel
- 256MB nVidia GeForce 8400M GS
- 160GB or 320GB 5400rmp or 250GB 7200 hard drive
- Draft-N Wireless option
- Blu-ray drive option
The Vostro 2510 has yet to appear on Dell's UK site, so we'll have to go by US pricing for now. That starts at $899 (~£450) for the most basic system, which is actually still fairly decent, so in the UK we're probably looking at a £500-odd starting price. Given the previous 15in Vostro starts from about £350-odd that’s a fair mark-up, but that's just the price of progress.
