Dell Enters 16:9 LCD Sector With 24 Incher

The new trend in LCDs is undoubtedly the ultra-wide 16:9 format so who can blame Dell for hopping onto the bandwagon...

The 'S2409W' is an impressive bow too measuring 24 inches across and featuring some rather slick minimalistic black styling. The format also means you get a swanky (if horizontally restricted) native resolution of 1920 x 1080 - perfect for 'Full HD' content.

Behind the scenes other numbers are equally impressive with Dell managing to squeeze a 5ms response time out of this new panel, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 300cd/m2 brightness. Of course we've seen some crazy dynamic contrast ratios thrown around recently (not least this 50 000:1 claim from Acer) but Dell has quoted a 'typical' figure so expect it to stand up reasonably well.

As you might expect from such a multimedia centric model, the S2409W also comes with an HDMI output with support for HDCP as well as DVI-D and the aged venerable VGA which refuses to die. In addition, being VESA compliant means this monitor can be wall mounted should you so choose.

For those feeling the titillation, a surprisingly attractive $379 RRP (approx £190) has been slapped onto the S2409W and it has been made immediately available on Dell US. Expect a two to four week delay before it shows up on UK shelves with a Being British 30 per cent premium.

Painful I know, but it is puuuuurty...

Very, very interesting. Just checked this monitor out on the site and I am loving what I'm seeing. $389 for a 24 inch monitor with 16:9 aspect!

Just one thing that puzzles me:

"the S2409W also comes with an HDMI output with support for HDCP as well as DVI-D and the aged venerable VGA which refuses to die."

Under connectivity on the site however it says:

"Digital Visual Interface - Digital (DVI-D) with High Definition Content Protection (HDCP)

Video Graphics Array (VGA)"

No mention of HDMI. Am I missing something here?

@GherkinG: Are there any 24" 1920x1080 IPS panels availible for dell to use?

If you want a 24" IPS then there is a new HP one coming out, it's not particulaly pretty but if they can get everything else right I'll certainly not mind.

Re: Jay.

Do you mean the site shows HDMI also. Because here is what I am seeing, look under connectivity
