DS Game Downloads Reportedly Coming To Nintendo Wii

It is with the benefit of hindsight that I think back to my article on getting some use from the PS3 (prior to Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune) and realise I neglected to mention the awesome ability to play old PlayStation games on the PS3 via Remote Play - a personal favourite being Crash Team Racing. The reason I mention the thought is because rumour has it than Nintendo is about to follow suit with a similar program for the Wii and DS, which could see ‘full games' being available to download on the former to be played on the latter - so says the New York Times anyway.

Quite how this would work is, oddly enough, unknown as yet - currently the Wii can be used to download game demos for the DS, but these are stored temporarily and are relatively small in size compared to a ‘full' title; speculation has it that a memory card expansion kit would be made available to buy to counter this problem. More pertinently the "Everybody's Nintendo" channel currently providing downloadable DS content is still only available in Japan (or with a Japanese console presumably) so we'll probably be waiting a while before a UK début is made.

Considering the success of the Wii's Virtual Console, largely due to the awesome selection of games, (Paper Mario anyone?) it's hardly surprising Nintendo wants the DS to get a slice of the download market as well. When one considers the portable device is already capable of playing GameBoy Advance games natively it seems likely that emulation is something of a forte of Nintendo's (take heed Sony and Microsoft). Frankly I wouldn't want to bet a great deal of money on this being as comprehensive a service as one might hope, but the possibility of downloading Castlevania to play on the DS is very tempting - not that I own a Wii.
