It feels like only yesterday I was paying through the teeth for a 16MB Compact Flash card. So it's come as quite a surprise to discover that Corsair's announced release of a 16GB Flash Voyager. These rubber coated sticks that never forget, are waterproof, shock proof and bounce around our labs on a regular basis.
Carrying 16GB in your pocket opens up a range of possibilities that I'm sure we're going to see developed in the future. That's enough room to carry around a complete OS install, and most of your documents too. The suggested RRP of $299 is not too over the top either but how that will pan out in Blighty style pounds will be anybody's guess.
On a similar front, Sony and SanDisk have joined up to release yet another variation of the Memory Stick format - “Memory Stick PRO-HG”. The good news is that it is reportedly compatible with current Memory Stick PRO devices and will be available in capacities up to 32GB. Internal clock speed has been increased from 40MHz to 60MHz too, for a maximum of 60MB/sec transfer rate. I'm certainly not one to quaff at a speed increase, especially not at one that's nearly three times the speed.
Nice partnership. If only SanDisk was around to guide Sony when designing the PlayStation 3...
