Water Is, Like, SOOO Last Year

Now this is a strange one as I do believe I have never seen a “liquid metal” cooled graphics card in my life.

Called the Blizzard range (I probably would’ve gone with Mercury… fast, liquid metal…), the technology involves a “secret” liquid metal that developer Sapphire claims is 65 times more thermally conductive than water. It’s non-toxic, non-flammable and environmentally safe (I’m guessing we can’t drink it though?).

Filled and sealed, the substance requires no user intervention, no reservoir or refilling and, since it’s fitted onto the card, no additional mounting space. Apparently it works by bathing the heatsinks in the alloy and results in “near silent” operation. A little like dunking a girlfriend then?

The first cards to test this system are not lightweights either with a Radeon X850XT and X850XT Platinum first out the door. These boys have 16 parallel pixel pipelines, 256MB of GDDR3 memory and are PCI Express.

No word on pricing or availability for either yet, but it just goes to show what can be achieved with a little bit of lateral thought...
