Confusion Over Google's Rumoured Twitter Bid

One story is dominating the Web today: is Google about to buy Twitter? In all honesty, we don't know but here are the facts...

Late last night not-exactly-controversy-shy-site TechCrunch reported that "Google is in late stage negotiations to acquire Twitter. We don't know the price but can assume its well, well north of the $250 million valuation that they saw in their recent funding. "

Twitter world went crazy with millions of tweets both for and against and then came the refutations with Walt Mossberg's All Things Digital site reporting "Google Is Not in 'Late-Stage Talks' to Acquire the Hot Microblogging Service" saying they have simply been engaged in "some product-related discussions". That should've been the end of it, no?

Well no.

This is because the rumour is now that talks began about product-related discussions but then scaled up hugely and Google isn't helping speculation as it has refused to confirm or deny the allegations. In steps TechCrunch with an update stating the two are in take-over discussions but they "are still fairly early stage".

Who do we believe? No-one yet. We'll keep you posted...

Update: Twitter co-owner Biz Stone has finally commented on the speculation in an attempt to calm things down. "It should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects," he explained. "Our goal is to build a profitable, independent company and we're just getting started."

All rather generic I'm afraid and it will likely do little to kill the rumours. Furthermore, Google continues to stay silent. I suspect this one isn't going away any time soon...
