Phone phones have come a long way in a short time and so have their games. Now Championship Manager has arrived along with a host of 90s classics.
Anyone who knows me knows that football management games and Gordon are a dangerous combination. I’ve lost days, even weeks at times insuring that Colchester, Walsall and once even Stratford (!) won the European Cup. I’m a legend on my own computer system having just won the league for the 17th successive time in an unbeaten season scoring 178 goals in 38 games and conceding 12. Jose Mourinho has nothing on me (he was sacked by Man U back in 2009 in my world and has been loitering around the lower leagues ever since).
So putting a version of CM5 (it’s no Football Manager as any Sports Interactive fan will tell you… but still) on my handset is potentially lethal. Costing just £5, the diddy version (dubbed “Solo” for obvious reasons) is a cut down Java based download. Only Premiership teams can be managed, but apparently almost every option from the desktop edition is here. I’m straight off after this to write up to go and see. It is available now on Orange, 3, Vodafone and O2 networks and each has a list on compatible phones on its sites. Fingers crossed yours is on it.
On another tack, and delving back to simpler and more innocent times are ports of 90s Bitmap Brothers classics Speedball 2 (above left) and The Chaos Engine (above right). The former was like a cross between American Football, Proper Football and brutality, the latter a top down walk about shooter of genuine style. Accompanying these two stand out titles are a mobile version of imminent console title Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure (below left) and two older puzzlers Zuma (below middle) and AstroPop (below right).
Naturally Eidos deserves a slap on the back for the CM port, while phone game specialist Glu Mobile is to thank for the other titles. Right off to take Stratford to the Premiership mobile-style!
