Canon Ixus 1000 HS Marks 10 Years of the Ixus

Canon Ixus 1000 HS Marks 10 Years of the Ixus

It’s hard to believe that the Ixus has been around for 10 years, but it has – and Canon is celebrating with the release of the Ixus 1000 HS, its new top-of-the-range model.

We’ve reviewed many Ixus models over the years, the newest as recently as June, and the oldest back in 2006, and this latest one brings a number of technological firsts to the range.

This latest slab of silver photographic luxury is the first Ixus to feature a 10x optical zoom, which Canon said makes it the slimmest super-zoom in the world. It’s also the first Ixus to be able to record Full-HD 1080p, doing so at 24 frames per second.

Its HS system in combination with the Digic 4 processing, allegedly enables the 10-megapixel sensor to capture at up to ISO 3200 with a claimed 60 per cent noise reduction at all ISO speeds over previous models. There’s even a ISO 6400 mode, but this is limited to 2.5-megapixels.

The small shell finds room for an image stabiliser, and the processor is fast enough to capture 3.7 shots per second in continuous shooting mode, and up to 8.8 shots per second if you drop to 2.5-megapixels.

There’s also a Super Slow Motion mode that can capture at 240 frames per second and you can watch it back at 30fps on the 3in PureColor II G 16:9 widescreen rear display.

The camera will be available in silver, brown or pink, and can be pre-ordered now for £349.

Please note your home page says "10X digital zoom". Didn't inspire me much but, like your article says, it's optical!

Is that really a photo of the back of the current model? That looks so 1985, the design is clunky and ugly. I cannot believe that is their pocketable "fashion" camera.

I bought my first Canon Ixus camera in 1996, although it wasn't a digital Ixus, it was actually an APS film camera. Great form factor, bought it as soon as I saw it in the the shop, poor images from APS film though due to small negative size.

Best regards

@HK - Yes, I'm also unsure about the bevelled edges and old-school style buttons.

@Gadget Detective - My first Ixus was a Ixus 500 which had a 1.5" LCD back-screen. I bought it based on the 10/10 Trusted Review score it garnered back in 2004 (review by Riyad. So shouldn't this be the oldest Ixus TR review?). The only problem was the battery was so poor, that once you took 3-4 photos it was time to recharge it again.

Now I've got an Ixus 80 IS which I enjoy using, and my next camera would probably be an Ixus too, as they are great digital cameras.

Nice, but no wide-angle. Apparently 36-360mm.

It's harder to believe Toy Story 2 came out 11 years ago. Makes you feel old.
