It's Christmas, or maybe not...

Arriving at the TrustedReviews office in the mornings can sometimes feel like Christmas - I know that sounds strange but bear with me on this one. Take today for instance. I arrived at my desk to find a small package sitting on it, and inside was a lovely present from Santa - OK, so it was from Canon and not Santa, but that kind of spoils my analogy! What Father Canon and his merry bunch of reindeer left for me today was the brand new IXUS 90 IS, and had this actually been Christmas morning, I probably would have been quite chuffed.

The IXUS 90 IS falls into Canon's high-end compact camera line-up. As such it's a beautifully designed piece of kit and feels just as good in the hand. There's a 10-megapixel sensor inside, which will produce higher resolution images than my current digital DLR. While the integrated image stabilisation should allow for sharp images even in low light situations.

At the rear you'll find a clear and bright 3in LCD screen, while the flush mounted buttons running down the right hand side add to the sleek and stylish appeal. And instead of a bog standard four-way rocker for navigation, you get a wheel that can be pressed or rotated for navigation duties.

You also get a 3x optical zoom, face detection, 30fps video recording and a shutter speed selection all the way up to 15 seconds. With an MSRP of £259, this isn't the cheapest compact out there by any stretch of the imagination, but traditionally the IXUS range has deservedly carried a price premium.

I'll be putting the IXUS 90 IS through its paces over the coming days, so you can expect a full review next week. If its performance can live up to its looks, Canon may well have another winner on its hands.
