Canon S2 IS

It’s Canon Time! A phrase I like to use to describe that great rush of new products the company likes to unleash on us all in one big go, every couple of months.

In February it was a slew of digital cameras and laser printers. This time it’s a high end digital camera and a slew of laser printers. To be fair, these product lines are primarily its thang.

So kicking us off is the Canon S2 IS, a five megapixel camera with incredible paparazzi potential given its built in 12x optical zoom. Canon’s optical Image Stabiliser (the “IS” in the name) acts to minimise shake when shooting at such distances as well as suppressing blur when taking stills.

Keeping functions nippy is the company’s DIGIC II processor which it seems to be throwing into most of its high grade cameras these days (digital SLRs, Ixus 40, 50 and 700). Consequently, Canon boasts that the S2 IS is twice as quick starting up and auto focusing as its predecessor.

Shutter speed is an impressive 1/3200 of a second and there are 18 shooting modes for you to fiddle with (I’m not sure I can think of that many different photography scenarios!).

Naturally, the S2 IS supports video, which can be shot at VGA resolution at either 30 or 15fps, while a 2.5in LCD means it should be fairly easy to keep a track of the action. Interestingly, a wind filter option has also been included to improve sound quality on blustery days and stereo playback is possible when the camera is connected to a suitable device with the supplied stereo cable.

At just 113 x 78 x 75.5mm (WxHxD) and 405g, the S2 IS has been put on a strict diet given the features on show. This appealing piece of kit debuts in June with an RRP of £469 including VAT.
