CES 2009: Creative Zii Revealed

All the hype, the marketing rhetoric, surely it was going to be impossible for the Creative Zii processor to live up to it? Yep.

That said, what we did learn after finding "Everything you know is about to change" didn't really happen was the company has designed a rather swanky highly scaleable supercomputing system on a chip.

Called in full the 'ZiiLABS ZMS-05', it can be used in something as little as a mobile phone or chained together to create a processing behemoth which Creative claims will be 100x smaller, 100x cheaper and 100x greener than conventional supercomputers.

As seems to have become a disappointing theme of CES 2009 however the company refused to give up virtually any other solid information other than point out performance can be tailored to range from 10Gigaflops to Petaflops (1015 floating point operations per second) and that there is 'huge' energy efficiency.

Of course wonderful the Zii may be but whether Creative has the size and market influence to push through its highly ambitious chip remains to be seen - especially having just laid off more than half its global workforce.

I'll give the Zii a cautious thumbs-up, but it'll really take 6-12 months to see whether it will have the game-changing effect Creative is preaching.
