Unsurprisingly, amidst all the VIA products, there was an S3 stand. On show were a couple of new bits of kit. First up was the DeltaChrome S8 ULP. The ULP stands for Ultra Low Power, so there’s no prize for guessing what this chip’s party piece is.
Despite drawing an absolute minimum of power, the S8 ULP is an eight pipeline, DirectX 9 compliant part. Of course this chip isn’t going to break any speed records when it comes to 3D, but what is impressive is that it requires no external fans, or even a heatsink when running 3D applications.
Also on show was S3’s new PCI-Express part, sporting an S18 chip. S3 is pitching the S18 against the lower mid-range competition like the ATI Radeon X600.
