Brother refreshed its best selling line of multifunction printers at the end of last week and the results look highly encouraging.
Targeting the SOHO market the seven new models are considerably more compact than their predecessors while boosting output quality, print speed and boasting an increased onboard memory size of 32MB. Access to consumables is now conveniently repositioned to the front, ink droplet size is down to just 1.5 pica litre and for the first time the majority have dedicated photo paper trays and LCD colour screens.
Four of the seven will come under the DCP line: 130C, 330C, 540CN and 750CW which begin from £79.99. The 130C (top left) is the baby of the bunch but still offers print, scanning and copying functionality, a claimed 25ppm mono print speed (20ppm colour) and 100 sheet capacity.
The 330C builds on this with a 20 sheet dedicated photo paper tray and 2in LCD for £99.99 while the 540CN adds a 10 sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) and is network ready for £129.99. Likewise the 750CW (top right) equals everything here but boasts a 27ppm mono print speed (25ppm colour), 2.5in LCD and wireless for £149.99.
The final three comprise the MFC range and begin with the 240C (above left) which again matches the DCP-130C but comes with a fax function with 40 speed dials and a 10 sheet ADF for £119.99. Mid-range is the 440CN which mimics the DCP-540CN but adds the fax and 80 speed dials for £149.99 while the 660CN (above right) tops things off by matching the 440CN then adding a 27ppm mono printing speed (22ppm colour), 2.5in LCD, telephone handset, answering machine and duplex speakerphone. This flagship will set you back £179.99.
Systran language translation software continues to be supplied on all models enabling scanned documents to be converted on the fly. In keeping with the DCP and MFC’s forebears Brother also keeps faith with its single ink cartridge system meaning you don’t need to bin unused ink just because you run out of a particular colour.
Canon, Epson, HP, Lexmark, Kyocera it‘s over to you…
